A CUBAN WEDDING
Want to say "I DO" under sunny skies? Head to Cuba. The government has simplified the administrative procedures and more and more resorts are now offering very attractive wedding packages.
Good Conditions
A sub-tropical climate, warm temperatures, spectacular sandy beaches and turquoise waters…is there a better setting for romance? Ideally located in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, Cuba already offers a lot of great conditions for a sunny wedding. But there’s more. When you think that Cubans are also renowned for their great fiestas, their lively music and their delicious rum, one can indeed start dreaming of a memorable ceremony. The natural and cultural attractions of the
island are complemented by the wealth of organizational experience and spectacular packages offered by the hotel chains and tour operators. In the last few years, many Cuban resorts in Varadero, Holguin and in the Cayos have joined the wedding parade.
Plan Ahead
For those who wish to get married in Cuba, the procedures are quite simple. Weddings should be booked no later than six to eight weeks prior to departure, mostly to secure the wedding date. During peak seasons (November, April and May), some hotels celebrate up to three weddings a day. You
then produce the required documents and start planning the ceremony – the number of guests, the type of package and location you wish (on the beach or in the gardens), the wedding dinner, etc.
Planning a few weeks in advance allows plenty of time for you and your guests to settle the last details with the wedding consultant, once you get to Cuba. According to the Cuban law, you must spend at least three days in the country before you get married.
Formalities
To get married in Cuba for the first time, the bride and groom need a valid passport and
a tourist card. Those that have been divorced also have to submit a certified copy of the
divorce certificate, that must be officially translated and notarized by a Notary Public. Then the
documents have to be officially legalized and certified by the Consulate of Cuba. For widows
and widowers, three documents must be submitted and translated the same way: a birth
certificate, the certificate of marriage and the death certificate. These translations, along with
the legalization process at the Consulate afterwards, cost approximately $320 per document.
It is also important to know that in Cuba, all weddings are civil and not religious. After the
ceremony, the wedding certificate is sent to your embassy in Cuba and then forwarded to the couple’s home address, 10 to 12 weeks after the ceremony. It is not mandatory but highly recommended for the couples to register their weddings within their own country, as well.
